Dec 10, 2008 · OLE DB was supposed to go beyond relational data sources to provide extensions to the column-row paradigm and provide "data access" over non-relational systems like "file system" (OLE DB provider for WebDav), Active Directory, Search Server (fulltext search worked through OLE DB once), Exchange, etc, etc. (Mostly) similar access to every source ... Out-of-process use of OLE DB provider "MSOLEDBSQL" with SQL Server is not supported. Does that really mean SQL-2016 is not supported for using new provider MSOLEDBSQL especially in Linked Servers, or is there anything I missed other than re-installing drivers and restarting the SQL Server. If a login does not exist, use the SQL Server Enterprise Manager to create it. Also, when creating an ODBC Data Source Name (DSN) in the ODBC Administrator, make sure to choose the appropriate authentication method when you configure the DSN, and to test the DSN in the ODBC Administrator to verify that it is working correctly. In the New Linked Server dialog box, use the options on the General page to configure your linked server: In the Linked Server field, type a name for your linked server. Under Server Type, select Other Data Source. In the Provider drop-down list, select Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers. In the Data Source field, type the name of your DSN.
